Where to start.
Fifteen books, three groups. None of them require any of the others, so you can begin anywhere — but if you'd like a steer, here are a few honest ones from me.
If you just want a one-and-done.
Each of the standalones works on its own. If pushed to pick three for first-timers:
- Little Ghosts — the most emotional of mine, an Audible #1 in the UK and US. A grieving father, a child who returns as a ghost, and a killer who never quite left. My current clear favourite.
- Deep Blue Lies — the most recent (2025). A young woman returns to a luxury Greek resort to dig into a twenty-year-old double murder.
- The Things You Find in Rockpools — the one that's been optioned for TV twice. Eleven-year-old Billy Wheatley decides to solve a murder on his lonely island. (It's also book #1 of a series — see below — but it stands on its own.)
The Rockpools series.
Four books following Billy Wheatley as he grows up — eleven in the first book, into his twenties by the fourth. Each can technically be read on its own, but they're best in order:
- 01
- 02
- 03
- 04
The Detective Erica Sands series.
Three books so far (a fourth is coming in 2026). These are more of a continuous arc than Rockpools — read them in order:
- 01
- 02
- 03
Also: The Cove (book #1) was written as a standalone, like Rockpools #1. So if you only want one Erica Sands book, that's the one that works alone.
